Glossary
VSA-100™:
The VSA-100 chip is the latest 2D and 3D graphics accelerator chip from 3dfx
that is part of the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 product families. The VSA-100 chip has a
scalable architecture with advanced features such as 32-bit rendering, T-Buffer™
Digital Cinematic Effects, FXT1™ Texture Compression, and Real-Time Full-Scene
Hardware Anti-Aliasing.
FXT1™:
Texture Compression FXT1 is 3dfx's open-source advanced texture
compression algorithm for non-DirectX® environments like Mac/OS, Linux, and
OpenGL®. The VSA-100 chip supports FXT1 and all five of Microsoft’s standard
DXTC DirectX texture compression modes in hardware. Texture compression allows
for higher quality images in less memory for improved game performance and
quality.
T-Buffer™:
3dfx's T-Buffer technology can dramatically improve the 3D rendering
capabilities of consumer PC's, bridging the "realism" gap that exists
today between motion picture or photographic imagery and computer-generated
images. T-Buffer effects include: Anti-Aliasing, Motion Blur, Depth of Field
Blur, Soft Shadows and Soft Reflections.
Real-Time
Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing: Anti-aliasing
smoothes jagged lines and eliminates the flashing or "popping" of very
thin on-screen objects by taking many samples of the scene and blending them
together. The result is a much smoother, far more realistic and pleasing image.
Fill
Rate:
The speed at which images can be rendered or "filled" onto your
computer screen, usually measured in pixels per second. A higher fill rate is
always better because it provides much greater image detail for improved visual
quality and renders many more screens of a given level of detail for faster game
play.
SLI
(Scan Line Interleave):
SLI enables two graphics processors to work in parallel on separate lines of a
single screen.3dfx ’s patented SLI is the industry’s most efficient graphics
multi-processing technology: images are literally produced two times faster than
is possible with a single graphics chip.
32-Bit
Textures and Rendering:
Many of today's games are created using 32-bit artwork for display at 32-bit
color depth.VSA-100's support for full 32-bit color means that you will see your
games as their creators intended.
2Kx2K Textures: This means that the VSA-100 can work with textures up to 2048 pixels by 2048 pixels in size, sixteen times the size of textures supported by the Voodoo3.
